It’s true, that it’s not a great idea that counts most, but great execution.
But the question is, does it always have to be massive effects or CGI to visualize someone’s imagination?
This is one of those beautiful examples, that comes up with a simple idea (or question in this case) an breathes in live into it in a light-hearted and wonderfully refreshing way.
French soft electronic artists Anthony Gonzalez aka M83 (originally founded with Nicolas Fromageau in 2000) has invited fans and ambitious video artists to create a music video for the song “We Own The Sky” of his latest 2008 album “Saturdays=Youth”.
The competition has attracted exactly 83 (M83?) artists from all over the globe and there are some videos of very high quality in visual execution and/or storytelling.
I have just grabbed a few, which I liked the most so far, but if you are still not sick of the song after hearing it several times just jump to the contest page on Youtube to find more (link below).
by Spencer Dennis (edit) and Daniel Spangler (VFX) aka Spaniel Productions
by David Altobelli (director), Dan Norton (motion design) and Matt Divito (additional VFX)
by Alex Takacs and Joe Nankin (directors), Adam Kauper and Jackson Seidenberg
by Luke Ewing and Samm Hodges
by Matt Ferrin, Joseph K. Gannon and James P. Gannon
In the past few months such video competitions often had bad press, because some inviting artists have never decided on a winner and the competition just fell into oblivion. Therefor many contributers have blamed the inviting artists to simply try to hog the limelight and when all the shine is gone they lose the interest in the contest and the contributions.
I do hope, that this is not the case here, because there is really a lot of outstanding work to find and in my humble opinion, there’s more than just one winner video.
Inspired by Processing wizard flight404 and Plasma Pong, an arcade game created by Steve Taylor, artist, musician and interaction designer Memo Akten (alias memo.tv, alias Mehmet S. Akten) has put together a Processing library to solve real-time fluid dynamics simulations based on Navier-Stokes equations and Jos Stam’s approximations.
Sounds too geeky for your taste? Well, if not, then have a look at his page (links below) for further geekery ;)
But in any case have a look at the video! Nobody can resist fluid simulations, especially when controlled by an iPhone or by an iTouch pod…
There is also a HD version available for download on the Vimeo page.
Prior to the multi-touch version Memo Akten did some tests with psychedelic fluids and particles with Processing…
PSST! (for “Pass it on” or simply “Psst!”) is a collaborative film project made by several teams of designers, directors, animators and composers resulting in numerous and very different films.
Since the first appearance of PSST! in mid 2006, the basic idea of the project — curated and organized by Bran Dougherty-Johnson of Grow Design Work — is kind of a serial creation process. Each film is split in 3 parts — the beginning, the middle and the end — and each part is done by another team.
“… derived from the Dadaist game of Exquisite Corpse and the children’s game telephone and applied to the arts of motion graphics, animation and film-making.”
PSST! 3 is the latest collection of 17 films made by 51 teams.
You can watch most of the films on their Vimeo space (there are also some films from PSST!2) or on the PSST! page (links below) .
N.A.S.A. (not N.A.S.A., the space agency) is a collaboration between Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon and a remarkable number of additional superstar collaborators like Kanye West, David Byrne, Method Man, Tom Waits, MIA, Santogold, Soulwax, George Clinton and many more.
The latest music video for “Gifted” (featuring Kanye West, Santogold and Lykke Li) from their debut album “The Spirit Of Apollo” is an astronauts journey into the unknown, through a martian landscape and some psychedelia brought to life by the guys from Three Legged Legs in their typical style (including cutting-edge ”Data Moshing” effects — see link below for more info about that new visual trend).
For everyone interested in the process of making such videos, you have to have a look at Three Legged Legs’s pages (link below), because they provide extensive case studies and insights (with texts, pictures and videos including animatics) for many of their projects. Really interesting!
There is also an older (2007) video for the N.A.S.A. track “Way Down” (featuring Barbie Hatch, RZA, and John Frusciante), which is still worth a watch and especially a listen. It has been directed by Syd Garon and is based on the original artwork of Sage Vaughn.
Scarygirl is a game, based on Australien artist Nathan Jurevicius’s Scarygirl project, which features numerous designer toys and mini comics.
“… a psychedelic, dream-like composition of heartfelt stories and reinterpreted folklore based around a cute but slightly odd little girl and her giant octopus guardian.”
